Fiducials

Fiducials on stencils are alignment marks used in conjunction with board fids for registering the PC board to the stencil. Full cut fiducials are typically used for manual alignment. 1/2 cut fiducials are used on printers with vision systems and must be dark, crisp and permanent.

Typically, stencil manufacturers will cut a cavity in the stencil and fill it with black epoxy. There are several problems associated with this process. During application, epoxy can be smeared, leaving a tail or haze on the stencil that will compromise fiducial recognition. Secondly, epoxy popping out of the stencil during the cleaning process can result in a line down. Thirdly, if the operator is not careful, epoxy could collect in delicate SMT apertures compromising proper paste deposition and release.

Seeing the need for an exact permanent fiducial process that cannot fail or compromise the stencil, IIT developed the IIT Permafid® Process. IIT Permafid® is an exclusive IIT process which the stencil is permanently branded through laser parameter manipulation rendering a crisp accurate permanent fiducial, thus eliminating the use of epoxy.
